'Medals for firefighters'

Local councillors have given their support to a campaign to recognise the commitment of firefighters during the Troubles.

The secretary of the Mid-Ulster Ex-firefighters' Association wrote to Derry City Council asking for support for the campaign calling for a medal to be struck to recognise the service given by firefighters during the Troubles.

DUP Alderman Joe Millar said the actions of firefighters during the Troubles merits recognition. "Other emergency services have been granted recognition for their efforts and it would be only right and proper for the Fire Service to receive similar recognition," he said.

SDLP Councillor Jim McKeever also said firefighters who served through the Troubles deserve a medal. "They were one service who went to all call outs regardless of what was happening. They came and did their job, often under very difficult circumstances and I would support their calls for a medal," he said.
