The north’s minister for Employment and Learning has been invited to Derry to discuss concerns over the implementation of the city’s One Plan.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey says he has asked the minister, Dr Stephen Farry, to visit Derry to outline what his Department is doing to help in the implementation of the One Plan - Derry’s regeneration roadmap.

Mr Ramsey says the visit is particularly needed given the need for Magee expansion and the future of employment programmes in the city.

“I asked the Minister to come to Derry to meet with stakeholders on Magee, skills, and importantly, the needs of Derry in terms of the employment provision provided by his Department.

“Concern has been expressed by a range of groups that the Department of Employment and Learning is not doing enough alongside their Departmental colleagues in terms of supporting Derry in our aims within the One Plan and specifically the skills development agenda as well as the need for DEL to show flexibility on employment programmes such as Steps to Success which are currently out for consultation.

“It is for MLAs in Foyle to show leadership in this regard and I am determined that we show the Minister we mean business around the One Plan, and leave him under no illusion that his Department must support and nurture Derry if we are realise our full potential in the areas he has responsibility for,” Mr Ramsey says.
