A Derry MLA has welcomed plans to implement an all-Ireland system of penalty points for driving offences.
The SDLP’S Pat Ramsey says he has recieved a commitment from the North’s Environment Minister Alex Attwood that such a system is now a priority - and could be in place by 2014.
“I asked the Minister yesterday in the Assembly if he was confident that the recognition of penalty points throughout Ireland will be in place by 2014.
“In his response, he recognised that the task of implementation of enforcement would not be easy given the technological hurdles such as IT systems as well as legal issues, though there is a requirement for the jurisdictions to share data.
“The Minister informed me that despite the issue only being raised formally around six months ago, both administrations are swiftly addressing the issues to allow this process to deliver a coherent enforcement programme.
“Road Safety is a key tenet of the Environment Department’s remit and they have been working hard to ensure a coherent approach to awareness as well as enforcement throughout the island, and it is key that the public know that given this priority, there would be no escape from penalty points if an offence occurs.”
