Money taken in armed robbery
A female shop worker has been threatened during an armed robbery in Derry.
Police say a sum of money was taken during the robbery at commercial premises in Mountjoy Terrace yesterday afternoon.
“At approximately 4.50pm it was reported that an unknown male armed with what is believed to be a gun, entered the premises and threatened a female member of staff before making off with a sum of money. A second male was observed standing outside the shop,” a PSNI spokeswoman says.
“Both males are believed to have made off on foot along the Academy Road.
“The member of staff was not injured during this incident, however she was left very badly shaken.”
Sinn Féin councillor Barney O Hagan condemend the robbery.
“The criminals who carried out this robbery and others in the city over recent months have nothing whatsoever to offer our society and it is important that they are apprehended and brought to justice. In the weeks leading up to Christmas I would urge business owners in Derry to be on alert for gangs who carry out these robberies.
“I would appeal to anyone who can provide any information which could help, to make it available to the police .”
Detectives would ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact them at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
