Most aggressive man police officer ever met

A District Judge today (Tuesday) remanded in custody a twenty-two years old man who was described by a police officer as the most aggressive person he'd ever met during his career in the police service.

The defendant, Andrew Burns, of no fixed abode, appeared in court in Derry charged with the burglary of a house at Church Meadows in the Rossdowney area of the city last Saturday during which three computers were stolen.

A police officer told the court that the defendant had a "history of violent crime and a propensity for violence" and he said it would be unsafe for the public to have the defendant released on bail.

The police witness said the defendant had been violently aggressive to police officers since his arrest and said he had also made disparaging remarks about the householder.

The officer said the defendant had previous convictions for burglary and added that he had broken court bail conditions on five previous occasions.

"In my career as a police officer he is the most aggressive person I have ever come across", he said.

Applying for bail, the defendant, who declined legal representation, told District Judge Barney McElholm that he had thirteen bail addresses available to him in Belfast. He also said he had been "subjected to violence" when he was a resident in children's homes. He was remanded in custody
