Mother on drugs charges facing jail term
A mother-of-two has been warned at Derry Crown Court that she faces a custodial sentence due to “the range of drugs” she was selling.
Judge Piers Grant told Jeanette McConomy of Kerrigan Close, it was “grossly irresponsible that she has not made responsible arrangements” for her children at her trial on Wednesday.
Granting the 32 year-old bail until next Tuesday, Judge Grant said: “I’m making it clear, absolutely clear, that I’m only granting bail to give you a chance to make suitable arrangements.”
The eight charges of ‘concerned in the making to another of an offer to supply a controlled substance’ arise from a PSNI search of Kerrigan’s home on October 29, 2010. The court was told that a small amount of cannabis resin, two mobile telephones and a sim card were found. Phone analysis revealed up to 60 messages to different people concerning the sale of drugs including cannabis, Amphetamine, Mephedrone and Diazepam. Under caution the defendant admitted the drugs were “mainly for her own use.” Judge Grant said: “The range of drugs you had available makes a custodial sentence inevitable. The fact that you’ve made no (childcare) arrangements is an indication of the responsibility you displayed when selling drugs.” Kerrigan will reappear before the court on Tuesday, March 19.
