Mum sentenced for cruelty to son
A mother has received a suspended jail sentence after she admitted in court a charge of cruelty towards her primary school son.
The thirty-four years old woman, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of her child, committed the offence twelve months ago.
Details of her cruelty towards her son were not made public when the case came before the Magistrate's Court in Derry.
District Judge Barney McElholm was told that the primary school child no longer lived with his mother and that this situation was likely to remain for the foreseeable future.
Mr. McElholm said he took into consideration when sentencing the defendant that her son did not want his mother to go to jail.
Imposing a four month jail sentence, suspended for two years, the District Judge told the defendant that if there was "a repetition of this sort of behaviour, you will immediately go to prison. There is no excuse for this sort of behaviour".
