Musicans gallop towards Olympics
With Olympics 2012 just 60 days away, Inishowen musicians and Derry bunscoileanna are getting ready to celebrate.
Buncrana composer, Tom Byrne and Irish language poet, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill have co-written ‘An Capaillín Spágach’ (The Little Horse With Big Hooves’), to provide ‘a lasting legacy’ from the games.
Mr Byrne explained the show will premier tonight at 7.30pm in the sports hall of the University of Ulster, Magee.
“He said: “Nuala and I will be joined by pubils from Bunscoil Cholmcille, Gaelscoil na Daróige and Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir as well as Inishowen musicians Róisín Harrigan, Martin McGinley and Maria Doherty. Together we will be telling the story of the AkhalTeke or CapalUisce, the mysterious, shimmering horse that emerged from the deserts of Turkmenistan to live in the lakes of Ireland.
“The piece was commissioned by the Verbal Arts Centre-based Comment-8 Project, which is funded by the Legacy Trust UK. The idea is to create a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by funding creative ideas and local talent.”
Bunscoil Cholmcille Principal, Seán Mac Cionnaith said his pupils had thouroughly enjoyed their involvement in ‘An Capaillín Spágach’.
He said: “It was a tremendous privilege to work with nationally and internationally reknowned Irish language poet, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and musician Tom Byrne. The children had a great time. They has fun using their Irish outside of school, in an imaginative and novel context.”
