National Schools Film Week in Derry
Local school children will be taking part in National Schools Film Week later this month.
The event - which takes place between October 15-26, is hailed as the “world’s largest film festival for schools.”
The festival’s goal is to support classroom teaching by providing schools with a powerful experience for their students that links directly to elements of the curriculum – supported by an on-line library of resources related to individual films and more generic topics – essentially an extension of the classroom.
This year’s programme in Derry includes screenings at the Strand Multiplex.
Movies being shown include: ‘The Muppets’ (Monday, October 22), ‘Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax’ (Tuesday, October 23), ‘War Horse’ (Wednesday, October 24), ‘Brave’ (Thursday, October 25) and ‘Mirror Mirror {Friday, October 26).
Across the North and in Britain, 470,000 students and their teachers attended the Festival in 2011 and this year the event is celebrating its 17th birthday.
Catherine Creighton, French teacher at Foyle College in Derry, said of last year’s event: “My pupils loved the opportunity to see the film in a theatre and would love the opportunity to do it all again.”
Nick Walker, Festival Director, added: “The Festival seeks to create a greater awareness and understanding of cinema based on the concept of relationships and dialogues in a variety of films, address issues of cultural exchange and raise awareness amongst teaching professionals of the use of film across the school curriculum. This is achieved by in-cinema talks and on-line resources, which give teachers the tools to encourage students to explore and understand new cinematic worlds.”
