New Batman film definitely not for 'Waynes'

A local councillor has criticised a decision to award movie blockbuster 'The Dark Knight' a 12A certificate.

SDLP Councillor Mark H. Durkan - who took his six year old son to see the latest instalment of the popular Batman series - says he was shocked at the level of violence on screen.

"I went to see the movie with my son, Luke, who is almost 7," Colr. Durkan told the 'Journal, "He is a big fan of the previous Batman films and had been eagerly awaiting the release of 'The Dark Knight' for ages. I was comfortable taking him to see a film with a 12A certificate as previous films with this classification have been suitable and enjoyable."

Colr. Durkan says he was "quite surprised" at the level of violence in the film, which stars Christian Bale as millionaire Bruce Wayne AKA Batman.

"Luke, although he'll hate me saying it, was quite frightened. Some other children were actually so disturbed by the violence depicted that they left the theatre early. Granted, I am no film critic but I am critical of the decision of the British Board of Film Classficiation (BBFC) to award this film a 12A certificate. I can imagine they were heavily lobbied by the film's producers to do so in order to maximise the number of moviegoers and, significantly, the amount of merchandise they can sell," he said.

Colr Durkan says that it is worth noting that the BBFC's Irish counterparts, IFCO, determined that the film was not suitable for anyone under the age of 15.

"This may, therefore, be an opportune time to highlight this inconsistency and call for an all-island film classification agency. This misleading classification detracted from what is, without doubt, a very good film and while I am no advocate of censorship I feel that parents should be aware of the film's content and be able to make an informed decision to allow their children to go and see it," he added.
