New Dungiven fire station plans

Dungiven could be in line for a new fire station if it gets the go ahead from planners.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue (NIFRS) has submitted an outline planning application for a new site to replace their current premises on Station Road, which was bult in 1980.

The potential site is located on Chapel Road, on the main A6 Belfast road, and is the site of the former Dungiven Primary School and yard.

“NIFRS identified Dungiven Fire Station, as one of 26 Fire Stations in Northern Ireland that need to be replaced or modernised over the next 10 years, as part of a programme of investment in Fire Stations,” said a spokesperson.

“The current Dungiven Fire Station has become unsuitable for the needs of a modern fire and rescue service. It is located on a busy street, subject to a one-way traffic system. There are limited facilities at the current Station, including limited parking and inadequate disability access and facilities inside the Station for female firefighters.

“Throughout our programme of investment in Fire Stations across Northern Ireland, NIFRS want to ensure we provide the best emergency fire and rescue cover for the community and to ensure the safety and well-bring of our Firefighters by providing them with the best possible facilities to work and train from.

“Outline planning application is only the first stage in the process towards a new Fire Station for Dungiven and NIFRS will be fully consulting with the community on plans for a new Fire Station.”

The spokesperson added: “A dedicated community facility in the new Station would allow NIFRS to engage directly with the local community on a range of fire and rescue safety campaigns, as well as provide a facility for the local community to use.”
