Newry teenager launched firework in Loughbrickland

A NEWRY teenager who launched a firework in Loughbrickland has been conditionally discharged for two years for being in possession of an offensive weapon.

Magistrate, Bernie Kelly told 18-year-old Daniel Carey that she was going to give him a chance and urged him not to ‘waste it’.

The School Road man was observed launching the firework at Scarva Street, Loughbrickland, at around 10.25pm on October 31, the local court heard.

On November 12 he was interviewed and admitted possessing the firework without a licence.

Ms Kelly said she did not know what Carey should be reprimanded more for - firing the firework in a public place, or firing it while under the influence of half a bottle of Buckfast.

A barrister said the offence was “probably the stupidest thing he has ever done”.

“He really does regret it,” he added.

The Magistrate said she hoped Carey’s parents had brought home to him the seriousness of the offence.

“Imagine if you had hit a child in the face or hand. You could have killed someone’s pet dog,” she added.

“I suggest that he changes his drinking habits.”
