North west crime hotspots mapped online

North West residents can find out which areas are crime hotspots and what crimes are being committed.

The new crime maps, launched yesterday, show how many crimes there have been in each area per month.

The maps give a breakdown of what type of crimes are being recorded, and where.

In Derry there were 430 crimes recorded in October of this year - the latest month covered by the maps - with anti social behaviour and violent crime accounting for half of all Derry crimes.

In Limavady there were 163 crimes recorded in October 2012, revealing the areas of Irish Green Street, around the Edenmore Road and Main Street as hotspots. For the same month in Dungiven there were 25 crimes, with hotspots in and around estates on the Garvagh Road.

Elsewhere in the borough, for the same month, there were three crimes in Greysteel, 30 in Ballykelly and six in Magilligan.

Northern Ireland has been incorporated into an internet site already providing the crime mapping service for England and Wales.

Chief Constable Matt Baggott said the innovation was part of the PSNI’s drive to place the community at the heart of its service.

He said he hoped it would increase interaction between police and the public.

“This new website has been designed to provide the public with the latest information about crime and anti-social behaviour in their local areas, right down to street level,” he said.

“We want this information to help promote informed engagement between the public, their local neighbourhood police officers and partner organisations to identify local solutions to local issues.”
