NWRC lecturer awarded £7,500 by Tribunal
A lecturer at North West Regional College has received a £7,500 pay out because she was suspended in a “humiliating” manner.
Fiona McGeady was awarded the compensation by the Fair Employment Tribunal.
She was suspended by college Principal Seamus Murphy after bringing a complaint against the college in August 2010 and while an investigation was being carried out into a previous complaint. The tribunal found that Ms McGeady, a lecturer at the Derry institution for 18 years, had been victimised because she had brought complaints in the past. It ruled there was no reason to suspend her.
It said the manner in which the suspension was carried out was “humiliating”.
Ms McGeady lost a tribunal case alleging religious discrimination in February 2010. However, three other cases, claiming discrimination due to her sex and her trade union activities, were settled in March 2010, without any admission of liability by the college.
When Ms McGeady brought a further case alleging victimisation in August 2010, Mr Murphy, launched an investigation and suspended her.
North West Regional College yesterday declined to comment on the issue.
In a recent meeting of the Government’s Employment and Learning watchdog, SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said Derry parliamentarians had been “inundated” with complaints about the “management style” at the college.
He read a letter from one member of staff who alleged treatment of employees “that would not be tolerated in any other environment”.
