O’Hagan poised for Council return
Barney O'Hagan.
Sinn Féin’s Barney O’Hagan is to make a surprise return to politics, the ‘Journal’ understands.
Mr. O’Hagan is expected to replace Maeve McLaughlin who stood down recently from Derry City Council.
Ms. McLaughlin resigned from Council to replace Martina Anderson who gave up her Foyle Assembly seat to join the European Parliament.
Barney O’Hagan’s nomination for the Northland ward is expected to be ratified at a party selection convention to be held in the city next week.
Originally from the Creggan area of the city, Mr. O’Hagan is a well-known Sinn Féin activist and lived for many years in the Hatmore Park area.
He served a previous term on Derry City Council, representing the Cityside ward, and at that time was elected chairperson of both the Planning and City Marketing committees.
He was also one of Derry City Council’s members on the North West Region Cross Border Group and was his party’s representative on the SEUPB Interreg Steering Committee.
A keen supporter of the City of Culture project, he is currently the co-ordinator of the Sinn Féin Councillor Group.
