Oakgrove to harness wind energy
A Derry secondary school is planning to harness natural energy by building a wind turbine more than 100 feet high.
Oakgrove Integrated College has lodged plans to construct what’s commonly known as a ‘farmer’s turbine’ to boost scientific education on the campus.
The plan provides for the installation of a Wind Energy Solutions turbine with a mast measuring 81 feet high and a rotor diameter of 59 feet. Its been proposed that the new structure be erected near the Gransha Park school’s hockey pitch.
The turbine could, according to wind levels, yield an output of 180,000 kilowatt hours/ per year of renewable energy and can be connected to the national grid.
Promotional literature from turbine’s Dutch manufacturers gives assurances of “an enormous reduction” in electricity bills.
However, school principal,Jill Markham told the ‘Journal’ that the educational value of the development was the key driver in the project.
“As far as we’re concerned the aim of the project is certainly from an educational point of view rather than a cost cutting exercise,” she said.
