Olympic Torch Picture Special - Weekend of Celebration Lights up the City

Waiting for Video...

Thousands of people across the city welcomed the arrival of the Olympic Flame at a weekend of family activity and celebration. The many organisations involved in the Big Flame Weekend said it was a memorable celebration for all.

Oonagh McGillion, Director of Development with Derry City Council said that eighteen months of organisation had culminated in a fantastic four day Olympic Flame event enabling community and sports groups to showcase their talents.

“It was a very special moment for the city as we welcomed the Olympic flame and supported this international event. The legacy of hosting the Olympic Flame and the festival weekend is that it recognised sporting and cultural achievement as well as acting as an inspirational moment for local community celebrations. The support along the route and the capacity audience of 12,000 at St Columb’s Park, made it a memorable occasion and one of which we should all be proud”.

Derry City Council on behalf of all the partners would like to thank all the agencies, community and sporting groups who supported the weekend with a special tribute to our former Olympians and our next generation of Olympians and sports people who were inspired by this event. Olympic Flame left the city at 7.26 on June 5 on its onward journey to Newry.
