Online Christmas shopping warning
Police have warned internet shoppers in Derry not to be fooled by "too good to be true offers".
Online shoppers have been urged to ensure any purchases they make are genuine and bought from a secure website.
A spokesperson said: “The Internet is a great way for those of us who don't like the hustle and bustle of town centre shopping to buy gifts quickly and without fuss. However there are a few things to bear in mind before parting with your credit/debit card details.
“Always look for the locked padlock icon - a security symbol that should indicate to you that any transactions are protected. Always check the terms and conditions so that if you are unhappy with your purchase you can return it for a full refund.”
The spokesperson also warned against bogus online auctions.
“Always be wary of entering into an agreement with an individual where you are not covered under the guarantee of the site/company. Make sure you know what you are getting before handing over your card details. In some cases people have paid for a games console or television only to find they have purchased an empty box.”
The police spokesperson added: “Don't be fooled by too good to be true offers - it's easy to think you are getting a bargain where others aren't, however the reality is you could find yourself out of pocket and facing a few disappointed faces on Christmas morning.”
