Only a matter of time - warning
A Limavady businessman fears it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured, or worse, following an altercation in the town centre at the weekend.
The PSNI said officers arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of disorderly behaviour and resisting police. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
“The arrest follows an altercation in the Catherine Street area of Limavady in the early hours of October 1. A window was broken in a take-away premises as a result of the altercation,” said the spokesperson. “Police in Limavady received the report of the incident at approximately 1.37am and arrived to the scene three minutes later. Police remained at the scene until calm was restored.”
Ryan Mullin, owner of ‘The Chippy’ on Catherine Street, where the window was broken, says since he started his business eight years ago, his five-foot square front shop window has been broken roughly eight times, costing on average £120 each time to replace.
“To be honest it’s not the expense of replacing the window that bothers me,” he said, yesterday. “It’s only a matter of time before the someone is seriously injured, or worse. Alcohol seems to be the factor fuelling the trouble.”
Mr. Mullin says it seems as though the Sunday nightime economy is almost as busy as Friday nights now.
“To be fair, the police are doing the best they can, but it seems the bother really starts when they’re not on the street,” he said. “I would like to see more resources on the street, especially up to the hours of 3am when people are still around.”
Mr. Mullin said he is doing what he can to tighten his own security, and his “main concern is for the safety of my staff.
““It seems any time there is serious trouble the police are not there. I know they’re working hard, but I would like to see more resources with more police on the street,” added Mr. Mullin.
The PSNI spokesperson said police in Limavady “continue to deliver a professional and protective service in the area and local neighbourhood and response teams continue to provide a visible presence and develop and enhance the established relationships with communities in this area”.
“Additional police officers have been deployed on foot patrols over recent months and this will remain,” said the spokesperson. Police in Limavady continue to work in partnership with local people to develop and implement innovative and flexible policing initiatives, ensuring that policing remains right in the heart of their communities.”
