Over 2,500 on housing list
There are more than 2,500 people on the housing list in Donegal.
Figures supplied by Donegal County Council show the total need for housing is around 4,200 people – including those that have been receiving rent supplement for more than 18 months.
The greatest need is in the Letterkenny electoral area where there is over 1,700 people on the list. Inishowen has the next largest demand with 842 on the list while the Glenties list is 587.
The Stranorlar electoral area has 533 people on the list while there is 510 on the Donegal electoral area list.
Over half the need is for two bedroom houses.
Those looking for three bedrooms make up 28 per cent of the list while 15 per cent of applicants are looking for one bedroom accommodation. Only 6 per cent are looking for houses with more than three bedrooms.
The figures were released following a question by Cllr. Terence Slowey.
The council says it will continue to strive to meet the needs of applicants by using a combination of existing and proposed social housing stock, leased properties, voluntary housing accommodation and accommodation acquired under the rental accommodation scheme.
