A Palestinian doctor whose three daughters and niece were killed when the Israeli army attacked his home will speak in Derry tomorrow evening.

Dr Izzeldin Abuelish, known as ‘The Palestinian Doctor’ thanks to a popular Youtube video, will speak at an event organised as part of Féile 2012 in conjunction with Trocaire.

Dr Abuelish, founder of the ‘Daughters for Life Foundation’ will discuss his own experiences, including the deaths of his daughters, Bisan (22), Mayer (15), Aya (14) and niece, Nour (14), who were killed by Israeli tank fire during the invasion of Gaza.

He was speaking by telephone to an Israeli television news station when he received the news that his home had been attacked and his family killed.

Following the tragedy he resolved to dedicating his life to providing educational scholarships to young women in the Middle East and promoting peace.

His experiences are recorded in his bestselling book, ‘I Shall Not Hate’ in which he argues that understanding and compassion can help heal the division between Palestinians and Israelis. A documentary on Gaza made by Trocaire will also be shown, followed by a question and answers session with Dr Abuelish.

Feile coordinator Amie McBride said the event is likely to be one of the highlights of this year’s festival.

During his visit to Derry Dr Abuelish will also meet with Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

Mr McGuinness said; “I am very pleased to meet with Dr Abuelaish to learn of his struggle for peace in the Middle East to discuss the experiences of peace building here in Ireland.”

The event will take place in the Verbal Arts Centre, Stable Lane, at 7.30pm tomorrow.
