Papal award for Hume

Former Foyle MP, John Hume, was awarded a Papal knighthood during a special ceremony in St. Eugene’s Cathedral on Saturday night.
The Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Eamon Martin, Derry Diocesan Administrator and Bishop Edward Daly, Retired Bishop of Derry, who preached the homily and conducted the Investiture.
The Papal knighthood means that Nobel Laureate Mr. Hume, former leader of the SDLP, is now a knight commander of St. Gregory the Great.
In last night’s homily, Bishop Daly described Mr. Hume as years ahead of his time and said that his determination to pursue a non-violent path inspired many around the world.
“John demonstrated to us that there was a non-violent and effective way to address the issues and injustices that confronted us,” said Bishop Daly.
“He consistently demonstrated and exemplified that there was another way - a way that would not involve bloodshed, fear, destruction, intimidation, misery or thuggery - a way of dialogue rather than armed conflict. His generosity and selflessness were epitomised in the manner in which he donated the entire cash element of his Nobel Peace Prize equally to the St Vincent de Paul Society and the Salvation Army.”
