A Waterside cat lover has expressed her fears after her pet was attacked by two dogs.

Mrs Gormley from Currynierin who has five cats, is currently nursing one back to health after it was attacked by two dogs in the estate.

The pensioner describes the attack as ‘horrific and prolonged.’

Six year old ‘Darkie’ was set upon by two dogs and sustained serious wounds to her back and paw.

The dogs encountered Mrs. Gormley and her cat in the lane adjoining her house.

“I couldn’t believe the injuries when I saw them. My fear is what would have happened if it had been a young child playing in that lane,” asked Mrs. Gormley.

“Darkie isn’t a house cat, he is used to being out and about and he was still caught by these dogs. I just don’t know if he is going to make it.

“The attack was horrific and Darkie stayed away from home for a few days afterward. I think he was hiding. Since the cat has come home he hasn’t moved from the front of the house.”

Mrs. Gormley said: “The entire estate is covered in dog dirt, dogs out here roam free. I can’t let out any of my cats for their own safety.”

As well as Darkie, Mrs. Gormley has Mucker, Cheeky, Tinker and Butthead the cats.

“I take in kittens who have nowhere else to go,” she said.

Mrs. Gormley hasn’t been able to afford the vet fees for Darkie and has been caring for him at home.

“I managed to stop the bleeding and I hope he’ll be OK but I don’t want this happening to another of my pets so I’m asking dog owners to be more responsible so it doesn’t happen again.”
