Petrol bomb follows police protest

A petrol bomb attack on the home of an elderly couple in Bishop Street has been described as “an act of madness”.
Shortly after 9pm a petrol bomb was thrown from Corporation Street over the roofs of houses on Bishop Street. It struck one of the houses and damaged guttering.
The PSNI were mounting a vehicle checkpoint on Bishop Street at the time of the incident.
Foyle MP Mark Durkan condemned the attack. “It is a disgrace that this elderly couple and their neighbours were put through such distress and disruption. Those responsible were out to cause damage and their contemptible actions only show they have an utter disregard for the many people who live nearby,” he said.
Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue said the attack put lives at risk. “What happened in Bishop Street can only be described as an act of madness. A petrol bomb was thrown blindly from the car park in Corporation Street over the roofs of houses that face onto Bishop Street. Whoever threw this device had no regard for residents, pedestrians, motorists or indeed anyone in the vicinity at the time. They have only succeeded in terrorising their own community,” she said.
The incident followed a protest in the area by members of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement against a visit by PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggot to Lumen Christi College.
A 32CSM spokesperson claimed the police were heavy handed when dealing with protestors. “The police came out of the school grounds and pushed the protestors back, Is this the type of activity that should be happening on school grounds?
“A number of the protestors met with the school principal to discuss their concerns,” he said.
The PSNI said that no arrests were made.
