PHA funding for culture volunteers
More than 220 volunteers are to get specialised City of Culture events training thanks to a funding boost from the north’s Public Health Agency (PHA).
John McBride , volunteer coordinator with the North West Volunteer Centre, says the PHA funding will allow 225 volunteers to undergo the World Host Ambassador Programme - widely regarded as the standard bearer in volunteer training for major events.
The programme was used to train the London 2012 ‘Games maker’ volunteers.
“This funding was most welcome as we had identified World Host, as the essential programme for all our volunteers,” John said.
“Our volunteers have been making a difference in civic volunteering for some time now, and we are building our skills in preparations for a very busy year ahead.
“Volunteering itself provides many benefits for the volunteer, providing the opportunity to have new experiences, meet new people and feel a sense of fulfilment from their support. The support of the PHA has already enriched the experience of the volunteers and we are grateful for their support.”
Brendan Bonner, PHA’s Head of Health & Social Wellbeing Improvement, said the funding will allow people to get involved in the City of Culture year.
“The WorldHost training is just one element of an exciting range of initiatives that the PHA is actively engaged in as part of our commitment to City of Culture.
“This will be an extraordinary year for the city and it’s critical that all citizens have the opportunity to contribute to and engage in the range of activities that will be available,” he said.
Late last year the North West regional College donated £40,000 to put 200 City of Culture volunteers through the world Host Programme.
