Pigeon lung info meeting
Pigeon fanciers in Derry are hosting an information evening with the British Lung Foundation to raise awareness of a medical condition known as ‘pigeon lung.’
Experts from the British Lung Foundation will meet with members of five local pigeon group, who will come together for the first time to discuss the issue.
It is the first such workshop held in Derry to warn local pigeon fanciers and pigeon racing enthusiasts of the dangers of the condition, which can be contracted through prolonged exposure to pigeon droppings and, to a lesser degree, feathers.
The disease is an inflammation of the alveoli of the lungs and symptoms include breathlessness, particularly after a sudden exertion or when exposed to changes to temperature.
As well as pigeons, other birds such as parakeets, budgerigars, parrots, and chickens can also provoke the condition.
The information evening will take place in the pigeon club, Foyle Road on Tuesday evening between 7pm and 9pm.
Mr Martin Kelly, a consultant from Altnagelvin hospital, a team of specialist nurses from the British Lung Foundation will be on hand at the information session to provide details on the condition, also known as Hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and to discuss how it can be prevented and treated.
Blood tests will also be available to local pigeon fanciers who are concerned they may already have the condition.
It is the first time the five pigeon racing clubs in the city have jointly organised such an event.
