‘Planet Limavady needs to catch up’

The campaign to have the world famous tune ‘Danny Boy’ played daily in Limavady has orbited to a new level after it was recorded and beamed from space.

Using Soundcloud, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield - who has become something of a Twitter sensation by frequently tweeting some stunning pictures - recorded the song aboard the International Space Station in honour of St. Patrick’s Day - tweeting “Danny Boy strikes home with me, now more than ever. I’ve recorded a version for today in orbit. Hope you like it!”

Back in the Roe Valley, Sinn Fein’s Anne Brolly says it’s time ‘Planet Limavady” caught up with Space.

“Everybody and anybody has recorded ‘Danny Boy’. Even in Africa when I visited, the Maasai tribe were able to sing ‘Danny Boy’. It’s such a famous song it is almost regarded as the national anthem of Ireland,” Colr. Brolly told the ‘Journal’. “Planet Limavady needs to catch up with the Space programme because we are way, way behind.”

Colr. Brolly, who with her husband Francie, along with legends Elvis, Bing Crosby, Hollywood actor George Clooney and countless others have all sung the ballad, claims there is a “lethargy” by Limavady Council to promote the borough’s ownership of the tune, which is set to the Irish tune, ‘Londonderry Air’.

“It’s one of the most inclusive songs there is. The archives at Trinity College show it was a Rory Dall O’Cathain tune, and it was picked up a fiddler in the town and written down by Jane Ross and the words are by an English judge, Fred Weatherly,” she said. “How much more inclusive can we get, but there seems to be a reluctance, a lethargy, when it comes to promoting it.”
