Plans are underway to illuminate Derry’s landmarks for the City of Culture year.
Planning applications for external facade lighting at several key buildings in the city have been lodged with the Planning Service. The work, which will cost £1.4m, is to be carried out as part of the Walled City Lighting Project in time for the City of Culture celebrations and plans have been submitted for facade lighting at The Playhouse, Aras Colmcille, the Apprentice Boys’ Memorial Hall, St. Columb’s Cathedral, The Guildhall and First Derry Presbyterian Church.
A council spokesperson explained that the Walled City Lighting Strategy is a key element of the wider Walled City Signature Tourism Project. The spokesperson added: “Council has secured £1.4m of grant aid from its partner, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to implement the project. The Walled City Lighting Strategy will illuminate selected significant heritage buildings and features through the installation of lighting apparatus on the City Walls and six buildings that have benefited from previous investment under the Built Heritage Programme, namely The Playhouse, Aras Colmcille, Apprentice Boys’ Memorial Hall, St. Columb’s Cathedral, The Guildhall and First Derry Presbyterian Church. When complete in late 2012, the project will contribute to an attractive evening environment that will enhance the City’s visitor offering, contribute to longer dwell time as well as bring positive benefits to the city centre evening economy”.
