SDLP councillor Martin Reilly has welcomed confirmation that the team which will administer the soon to be introduced plastic bag levy are to be based in Derry.

Ten jobs created to oversee the tax will be based in the city. Cllr Reilly, who brought forward a motion to Derry City Council as far back as 2005 calling for the introduction of the plastic bag tax, says both the job creation and the environmental benefits of the levy are to be welcomed.

“As well as the environmental and behavioural effects there is the added benefit of 10 new administrative jobs for Derry associated with the levy,” he says.

“The plastic bag tax has proved to be a very successful measure in the South and more recently in Wales and there is every reason to believe that those positive effects will be repeated here in Derry and throughout the North.”
