Playhouse wins another award

The Playhouse has won a second award for the buildings regeneration and restoration.

The award for best practice in regeneration in 2009 from the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) follows hot on the heels of an award from the Royal Institute of Town Planners earlier this year.

General Manager of The Playhouse, Niall McCaughan said: "We are really delighted to have won this coveted award, which is the top award for regeneration in the UK. This award for The Playhouse is not just great for us but for Northern Ireland as a whole.

"The building not only won because of the way the stunning buildings have been regenerated, but also how they acted as a catalysis for regeneration of the Cathedral Quarter of Derry, and more importantly that in so many ways they acted as a tool in the regeneration of people themselves."

Restoration work of the B1 listed buildings began in October 2007. Costing just over 4.6million, The Playhouse moved back to it's lovingly restored buildings in March this year and has become Ireland's most up-to-date arts centre.

Congratulating the Playhouse on their latest accolade, Mo Durkan, Ilex urban regeneration company said: "The Playhouse has very effectively regenerated two Victorian schools and enhanced their capacity by an extension to the rear. In so doing, the Playhouse team has safeguarded key heritage buildings within the Walled City while also creating a state-of-the-art facility which any arts venue would envy"

Representatives from The Playhouse will collect the coveted award in January at a ceremony in London.
