Police in Derry are looking to speak to a group of males allegedly involved in assaulting a man who was later found dead.

The ‘Journal’ understands the man, who was assaulted close to Shipquay Gate in the early hours of Tuesday morning, was later found dead in a property at John Street.

It is understood his death is not being treated as suspicious.

However police want to speak to those involved in the earlier assault and to a member of the public who came to the victim’s aid.

“A 42 year-old male was involved in an altercation with a group of males in the Shipquay Gate area of Derry City Centre, at around 2.50am on Tuesday 5th February,” a PSNI spokeswoman says.

“The victim is believed to have been punched by another male and he then fell to the ground. Police are keen to speak to a person who assisted the victim. Police are also keen to speak to the group of males and anyone who was in the area at the time.”
