Police appeal over counterfeit currency

Police are warning small businesses and residents to be on their guard against counterfeit currency, in particular £20 notes, circulating in the Limavady borough.

Police say they have received a number of reports recently.

Raids locally last week were conducted after “receiving intelligence that some individuals in the area are distributing these counterfeit notes”, said Area Commander Sam Donaldson.

“If anyone has any information whatsoever please come forward to us because the last thing we want is for businesses to be out of pocket,” he said.

Mr. Donaldson said in particular, smaller businesses cannot afford to be conned, and urged anyone who think they have been in receipt of fake notes but are not sure to contact police. He said, to date, a few shops, and some bars, had been affected.

“I’d like to take all this counterfeit currency off the streets,” he said.

Police say it is a “criminal offence to try to pass or keep a banknote that you either know or suspect to be counterfeit. If you inadvertently receive a note that you believe to be counterfeit, you should take it to the nearest police station”.

Anyone who has any information regarding the production or distribution of counterfeit banknotes, is urged to contact police by calling 0845 600 8000 or alternatively contact the ‘Crimestoppers’ charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
