Police attacked at Derry Loyalist flag protest

Police will carry out a “robust investigation” after coming under attack from bottle throwing Loyalist flag protestors in Derry.

A PSNI spokeswoman said their priorities are to “protect the public, preserve public order, uphold the human rights of all and gather evidence of any wrongdoing with a view to prosecuting anyone who breaks the law.”

The PSNI comments come after missiles were thrown at officers policing a protest in Derry’s Waterside last night.

Police made three arrests.

“Police understand the frustration of the community and must consider the rights of all when making decisions to ensure that protests and parades pass off with minimal disruption and restriction to those communities,” the spokeswoman said.

She continued:”On the evening of Monday, 21st January Police issued a number of warnings over a 30 minute period to protestors who were blocking roads and obstructing traffic in the Glendermott Road area of Londonderry, before attempting to move protestors onto the pavements.

“A number of protestors then attacked the Police and between 20-30 bottles and other missiles were then thrown at them which resulted in 3 juvenile males being arrested and 1 officer sustaining an injury. Police continued to monitor the situation to ensure the protest continued without restriction to the public.

“As with all enquiries, a robust police investigation will be conducted and all appropriate evidence thoroughly considered in an effort to bring law breakers before the courts. Anyone who has a complaint about the conduct of a police officer should contact the Office of the Police Ombudsman.
