A police investigation is underway into the death of a baby at Altnagelvin hospital.

The infant, who died in December 2011, was one of four children to die from Pseudomonas, the other three deaths taking place at the neo natal unit in Belfast’s Royal Jubilee Maternity Unit Hospital in January 2012.

A police spokesperson said: “Police are conducting preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of four babies from Pseudomonas at two Northern Ireland hospitals in December 2011 and January 2012. Two families have made complaints to police but the families of all four babies have been made aware of the situation.” Police have not confirmed the nature of the allegations being investigated. A spokesperson for the Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) said: “The Trust has not as yet been contacted by the PSNI in relation to any investigation they are taking forward regarding Pseudomonas. If approached the Trust will cooperate fully with any PSNI investigation. The Trust will not be commenting further at this time.”
