Police surgeries for locations in Dungiven

While there is “no progress” with a date for disposal of Dungiven police station, Area Commander Sam Donaldson has revealed police are in the process of identifying locations for “surgeries” in the town.

Dungiven PSNI station was approved for disposal by the Policing Board earlier this year but, currently, the station is being utilised for Neighbourhood Policing and is open every other Tuesday to the public.

“This station is a communications site for the PSNI and therefore relocation of the communications mast has to be progressed prior to disposal. It is intended to progress the disposal of the site in accordance with normal procedures by the end of this financial year,” said a NI Policing Board spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that in due course the site “will be submitted by the PSNI Estate Services Business Unit to Land & Property Services to be circulated throughout the Public Sector for expressions of interest in the first instance, in accordance with Guidance for the ‘Disposal of Surplus Public Sector Property’. Should there be no interest from the public sector, the property could then proceed directly to the open market for disposal.”

In the meantime, Chief Insp. Donaldson said he hopes to start the surgeries for the public in Dungiven “very soon”. He said there would only be a couple of surgeries to begin with.

“Let’s start simple and go to the public and bring policing to the community, and make it accessible to all,” he said.

Mr. Donaldson said surgery locations would be “in and around the centre of Dungiven”.

Earlier this year, the PSNI revealed the annual cost to run Dungiven PSNI station is £74,645. The estimated market value is £150,000 while estimated decommissioning costs are £45,000.
