PPS to investigate Derry loyalist protest parade

A parade of around 150 loyalists in Derry's Waterside is to be reported to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

The march, which has been defended as a peaceful and dignified protest by the UPRG - a group which provides political analysis to the UDA - took place last Thursday night.

A police spokesperson today said: "There will always be a range of options available to police when dealing with this type of incident. On occasion that may mean gathering evidence with a view to prosecution or the circumstances may call for a more direct and immediate response.

"On this occasion police monitored the situation, noted what occurred, and on review we have decided to make a report to the PPS.

"If such action should reoccur in the future police will ensure they are in a position to gather evidence in relation to any breaches of the law and take whatever action is necessary."
