Praise for police after drugs seizures

The SDLP and Sinn Fein have praised the police for a surge in drugs seizures across Derry.

Recent statistics have revealed that almost £.5m in illegal drugs were taken off the streets in the city in just four months with 71 drug arrests following a campaign to crackdown on drug dealers.

Councillor Thomas Conway, Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership Chairperson, congratulated the PSNI. “In the four months between April 2012 and July 2012 police in Foyle have made a total of 71 drug seizures and removed drugs with an estimated street value of £444,099 from our communities. Over 17% of all drugs seized in Northern Ireland during this period were seized in the Derry City Council area. These significant seizures include over 42.5kg of herbal cannabis, 404 ecstasy tablets and 13grms of opiate powder,” he said.

Sinn Féin Councillor, Elisha McCallion, added: “The social effect that these drugs can cause to communities is well known with addictions leading to higher levels of crime and higher levels of social care and rehabilitation needed for users.”
