President Michael D. Higgins will visit Derry tomorrow to address the GAA’s national congress.

It is one of a number of engagements the President will carry out during his visit to the city. The President will address the conference at the Venue 2013 at Ebrington which is being held as part of the GAA’s contribution to the City of Culture celebrations.

President Higgins will also visit St Columb’s Park House where he will meet with representatives of Youth Action Northern Ireland. He will then travel to Belfast where he will attend a celebration of the life of the late trade unionist, Inez McCormack.

It is believed this will be the first of a series of visits the President will make to Derry during the City of Culture events.

President Higgins will be the patron of the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Derry in August and is expected to visit the city during the week long festival of Irish traditional music.

The President was in Rome earlier this week to attend the inauguration of Pope Francis and said that, during a discussion with the Pontiff, the Pope extended his blessings to the people of Ireland and asked for their prayers in return.

President Higgins made the first visit of his presidency to Derry in October 2011.
