Prisoner found dead in cell

A convicted prisoner has been found dead in his cell at Maghaberry.

The Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) confirmed “the death in custody” of Patrick Farren overnight at Maghaberry Prison.

In a statement this afternoon, the NIPS said: “Patrick Farren (58), who was sentenced to five years, was found in a collapsed state in his cell. Efforts to revive Mr Farren proved unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 03:44hrs.

“The PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have been notified and investigations are ongoing. The family has also been informed.”

Prison Service Director General Sue McAllister said: “I would extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of Mr Farren. This is a tragedy and my thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
