Probation for mum who hit son with vase
x
A woman who left her son in intensive care after hitting him with a vase has been ordered to complete a probation order.
Tresa Doherty, of Carnhill, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm on February 2, last year.
Derry Crown Court heard the 51-year-old struck her son once with the vase following an argument in their Garden City home.
Her son Sean O’Connor was left in intensive care for nine days following the incident, but has now made a full recovery.
The court heard Doherty, who was a teacher in a local grammar school for many years, has a difficulty with alcohol and this incident was “immersed in alcohol”.
Imposing the three year probation order, Judge Piers Grant said it was a “very serious offence” which would normally attract a “lengthy custodial sentence”.
He warned Doherty if she did not fully engage in alcohol counselling during the period of probation “prison is where you are going”.
