Project Kelvin will open new markets for Derry

Project Kelvin will place Derry at the heart of the world's telecommunications network, a leading American business conference has been told.

Delegates at Capacity USA, the telecommunications industry's flagship annual conference were last month told the 30 million euro project will provide a range of new business opportunities for American businesses.

Bjarni Thorvardarson, the chief executive of Hibernia Atlantic, the company behind Kelvin, said the project will offer a new wealth of capacity and the ability to directly and securely connect to Canada, US, UK and mainland Europe.

“Global companies are interested in the additional fast and secure bandwidth, where critical information can avoid common and congested routes around London and New York waterways.

"This is attractive for global banks, content delivery networks, media houses, international carriers and others who require large bandwidth via a secure and diverse footprint from North America to Europe.

“Additionally, Northern Ireland businesses selling goods and services overseas can now take advantage of greatly improved competition in the international telecommunications market. Project Kelvin will open up new markets and new trade opportunities for the region," he said.

He said the project will allow for the " delivery of high capacity services to and from North America and other major European markets, empowering Ireland for further global commerce.”

The 30 million euro EU funded project - was the source of a major political row earlier this year, when it was announced its key telehouse facility was to be built in Coleraine rather than Derry - despite earlier assurances the city would be the central location for the project.

But pressure on the Stormont Assembly saw that decision overturned - a move that is set to see Derry become the European hub for the world's telecommunications industry.
