Project teaches children dangers of alcohol
Limavady PCSP Chair Councillor Brenda Chivers is backing the “My Name is Katie” campaign, an early intervention alcohol project which targets the parents and carers of Key Stage 2 children.
The overall message behind the project is the power of parental influence – Start thinking before they start drinking.
Working on the basis that it’s easier to prevent children from beginning to use alcohol than it is to intervene once patterns are firmly established, the project aims to raise awareness with parents and carers of primary school children to provide information and advice, specifically focusing on early intervention and adopting a harm reduction approach.
‘My Name is Katie’ is an emotive project, at the core of which are young children, illustrating how their lives could be negatively affected by alcohol.
The project has produced a DVD and resource booklet aimed at increasing the number of conversations between children and their parents about the harms of underage alcohol use.
Commenting on the project, PCSP Chair Councillor Brenda Chivers said: “We are delighted to be involved in delivering this project and supporting parents and carers to reduce the harm alcohol can have on the lives of young people.
“The DVD and resource pack will be disseminated widely across the council area during the campaign. We hope the project will provide much needed support and advice for parents and carers in respect of appropriate communication with young children around alcohol.”
