PROTEST TO RAISE STINK OVER CHARGES
Donegal Action Against Austerity is to hold a series of meetings across Inishowen against the septic tank registration.
The group says the decision follows the success of its recent Buncrana meeting which saw a unanimous vote to maintain the opposition to septic tanks charges and property taxation.
A protest against the septic tank charge registration will also take place in Buncrana this Sunday at 2pm.
Spokesperson for the DAAA, Joe Murphy said: “Due to the success of our meeting held in Buncrana on January 17, where we had a unanimous vote to maintain the boycott on property tax and septic tank registration, we have organised another series of meetings around Inishowen.”
The DAAA meetings will take place in The Persian Bar Carn (Tuesday, January 22 at 7.30pm) Lilly’s Bar Malin Town (Wednesday, January 23 at 7.30pm), the Trawlerman Bar (Moville, Thursday, January 24 at 7.30pm) and Market House, Clonmany on Friday, January 25.
Meanwhile the arranged protest for January 27 in Buncrana is to begin outside the Inishowen Gateway Hotel.
Mr Murphy also hit out at a series of Fianna Fail meetings on septic tank registration for “giving out the wrong information”.
However, Donegal Fianna Fail Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has said the party has “stepped in to provide people with the information they need as the deadline for registration approaches”.
According to Mr Ó Domhnaill a lot of confusion remains about the impact of the Government’s new septic tank legislation.
He is expected to join Fianna Fail Councillor Paul Canning in a series of information meetings on the issue in Inishowen this week. Colr Canning, who is an architect and qualified site assessor, explained: “We want to provide local homeowners with the information they need about these new laws and to assist them with the registration process.
“It is unacceptable that the Government has failed to do this while imposing a deadline of February 1 in order to avail of grant aid of up to 4,000 euro and escape huge fines put in place by the Environment Minister.”
Colr Canning said: “Many householders are rightly worried about this new law which was rammed through the Dáil by Fine Gael and Labour. We hope these meetings will help inform people of the implications of the septic tank legislation ahead of the pending deadline.”
The meeting venues/dates are as follows: Meetings will take place in Burt Hall on Thursday (24) at 8pm, in the Malin Hotel on Saturday, January 25 at 8pm, the Lake of Shadows Hotel, Buncrana on Sunday, January 27 at 8pm, in the Redcastle Hotel on Monday, January 28 at 8pm and the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny on Tuesday, January 29.
