Punched and kicked police officers

A man who made sectarian comments to police after they were called to a domestic incident has been jailed for five months.

Kieran Damien Breslin, whose address was given as St Columbs Wells, pleaded guilty to two assaults on police on December 12, last year.

He also admitted harassing his ex-partner and making a threat to damage property on the same date.

The local magistrates court heard police were called to the woman’s house because the 32-year-old was banding on her door. He began shouting at them claiming “I didn’t do anything f****** wrong” and then tried to “throw punches at police”.

The court was told Breslin managed to strike both officers and kicked one of them while being restrained.

He “continuously swore at police and made very sectarian comments to them” the court heard.

Breslin was arrested and after caution he replied “go f*** yourself”.

Defence solicitor Maeliosa Barr said the 32-year-old has mental health difficulties and a problem with alcohol.

He added that on the night of the incident Breslin was extremely drunk and has no recollection of it.

Jailing Breslin, District Judge Mervyn Bates said the court “always views domestic incidents very seriously”.

He also imposed a restraining order for two years which bans the 32-year-old from contacting his former partner or going within 100m of her address.
