RAAD claim responsibility for Rosemount shooting

Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) have claimed responsibility for the shooting of a 26 year-old man in the Rosemount area of the city on Sunday night.

The father-of-one, who’s 26, was shot in both legs and one foot when he opened the front door of his Florence Street home and was confronted by a masked gunman who fired three shots at him.

He was hit in both legs and one foot and has been taken to hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The gunmen left the scene on foot. Up to five shots were fired in the incident and a number of bullet holes were visible at the front door of the house. Another bullet was lodged in a wall in the kitchen of the house.

The man’s partner and four year-old child were in the house at the time of the shooting but were not injured. It’s believed the gunman may have asked a teenager playing football in the street to knock on the victim’s door before the shooting.

Attack condemned

Foyle MP Mark Durkan condemned the attack and said such actions would be rejected by the local community.

“I strongly condemn this despicable and cowardly attack. There must be no doubt that the community totally rejects the perpetrator of this callous crime.

“We had all hoped that this type of attack had been consigned to history. I urge anyone with information about this attack to immediately contact the PSNI so that the perpetrator can be brought to justice,” he said.

Sinn Fin DPP member Maeve McLaughlin called on those responsible to explain their actions.

"The people who carried out this attack in Rosemount need to explain to the community the rationale for their actions. It is very worrying that this shooting incident occurred when young children were present in the house. I have visited the home this morning and the family are very angry and upset,” she said.

A PSNI spokesperson said the investigation into the shooting is at an early stage and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
