Radisson to cut jobs
Redundancies at one of Limavady's biggest employers, the Radisson SAS Hotel, is "devastating" for the town, Mayor Brenda Chivers has said.
The hotel opened in June 1995, and employs 180 staff.
"It's just frightening," said Mayor Chivers. "When is this going to stop; all these redundancies?"
Earlier this week, a hotel spokesperson confirmed there would be lay offs, but refused to comment on how many.
"The management board at Radisson SAS Roe Park Resort, which opened in June 1995, can confirm that they have spoken to the Joint Consultative Committee that represents the staff in the Hotel, and confirmed that there will be some staff restructuring and possibly some redundancies, over the coming months," said the spokesperson.
"Obviously the current economic climate and pressures on the hospitality sector are having an effect on business in 2009, so unfortunately the Hotel has had to do this to improve efficiency within the Hotel and ensure job security for their 180 staff.
"At this point the Radisson SAS Roe Park Resort feel it would be unfair to comment further on the number of redundancies, only that they expect them to be at a minimum."
After the lay-off of hundreds of workers at Seagate's Aghanloo plant in September, 2008 Colr. Chivers said it was "more bad news" for the town.
"You would have thought Radisson would be safe enough, but I suppose no one is in the safe zone.
"It is devastating for the borough, and makes everyone's future so uncertain."
