Ramsey pays tribute to 'dedicated' Durkan

Foyle SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey has paid tribute to Mark Durkan, who stepped down at the weekend, for giving "excellent service" to local politics.

Speaking after Mr Durkan stood down as SDLP leader at the party's annual conference, Mr Ramsey said: "Mark has been a central role in Irish politics for the last three decades, behind the scenes and as elected representative. He is recognised as being centrally involved in the negotiations leading to the Good Friday Agreement."

The SDLP chief whip also said Mr Durkan has changed Derry during his time as party leader. "Through his political influence, and directly during his time as Minister in the Northern Ireland Executive, Mark ensured that very important investments were made in Derry," he said.

Mr Ramsey also said he hopes Mr Durkan will continue as Foyle MP in the next parliamentary term. "The fact that Mark delivered these investments while during very difficult unstable political circumstances at Stormont is testament to his ability and dedication. While others were creating political problems he was delivering real benefits to people.

"Mark is a very respected politician. There is no doubt he will continue to deliver for the people of Derry in his role as MP now and into the future," he said.
