Rare Siege book on sale
A three hundred-year-old book chronicling the Siege of Derry penned by the then governor of the city will be a major attraction at this year's Belfast Book Fair.
Reverend George Walker's ' A True Account of the Siege of London-Derry ', published in 1689, is one of a number of Derry specific books that will be on sale at the 27th annual Belfast Book Fair will be held in the Wellington Park Hotel on Malone Road this Saturday.
Jim Vallely, of Craobh Rua Books, who has organised this weekend's fair says book lovers should not miss this " fabulous opportunity."
" With many of Ireland’s leading antiquarian and second-hand book dealers under the same roof, the one-day fair presents a fabulous opportunity for readers and collectors alike,” he says.
“We have several gems of particular Derry interest.”
As well as Rev Walker's Siege account, these include S O Ceallaigh’s ‘Gleanings of Ulster History’ and Nora O Cathain’s little gem ‘The Heart of Ballinascreen’.
Among the highlights of the prints section will be two large facsimile plans of the city and county of Derry, showing the divisions made by the London Companies.
Rare issues of well-loved Irish poet and novelist Patrick Kavanagh’s short-lived newspaper ‘Kavanagh’s Weekly’ will also be amongst this year’s items to look out for.
The Book Fair gets underway at 10am.
