Raychel Ferguson clinical evidence to begin
A public inquiry into the death of nine year-old Derry girl Raychel Ferguson is to reopen on Friday.
Raychel Ferguson died in June 2001 in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children after surgery at Altnagelvin Hospital.
An inquiry is being held into her death, and the deaths Claire Roberts and Adam Strain while it is also examining the events following the deaths of Lucy Crawford and Conor Mitchell.
Following several adjournments, the inquiry into the hyponatraemia-related deaths will hear the opening of evidence on “clinical issues” arising from Raychel’s death on Friday, a spokesperson for the tribunal said.
“The Openings in relation to the clinical issues arising from the death of Raychel will now be delivered by senior counsel to the Inquiry and by Stephen Quinn QC, senior counsel for the Ferguson family at Banbridge Courthouse.
“Oral evidence will then commence on Tuesday, February 5,” the spokesperson added.
In the case of four of the children involved, the inquest stated that hyponatraemia was a factor that contributed to their deaths.
Hyponatraemia describes an abnormally low level of sodium in the blood that can occurs when fluid is not administered correctly.
