Re-enactment of Operation Motorman

A number of events took place in the Creggan area of the city last night to mark the 40th anniversary of Operation Motorman.
One of the events included a historical re-enactment of the huge military operation, complete with performers dressed up as British soldiers and IRA members.
The re-enactment at Creggan Heights was led by well known Derry republican, Gerry McCartney, who gave a talk on the historical context of the era. To illustrate his comments on the Free Derry period, a vintage Ford Cortina, containing four masked IRA members carrying replica weapons appeared on the scene and the performers staged a mock checkpoint.
The re-enactment continued with a group of performers dressed up as British soldiers carrying guns, riot shields and batons appeared on the street while a group of local children banged bin lids.
A crowd of several hundred people attended the event, including Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.
The commemorations also involved the unveiling of a plaque in memory of IRA volunteer Seamus Bradley, who was killed during Operation Motorman, and a talk on the investigation into the death of Daniel Hegarty, who was also shot dead by British soldiers on the same day.
